Conquering procrastination

In all honesty, this post is mainly for me, i understand that this entire blog is really only for me, but this post in particular…. It’s confrontational to say the least.

I am a serial procrastinator and have the insistent tendency to start projects when i already have way too many to work on. I immediately get overwhelmed, leaving all of them to sit unattended for weeks, sometimes even months on end and eventually becoming incredibly depressed from burnout and/or from my sheer refusal to actually finish anything.

So, this post is for me, but if you are here and enjoy witnessing a good self inflicted dressing-down, you’re in the right place.

Since graduation i have become lazy, blaming everything on my silly little brain and its honestly quite boring now. I always bang on about the cons of a job in art because i want creative freedom but its time to face facts, i NEED the pressure that comes with a tutor breathing down my neck.

Thus i have made up said teacher: her name is Francine

Here is an image of Francine in the style a petulant child might adopt when drawing their irritating teacher in the margins of a text book:

Marvellous.

Francine’s list of projects for me to complete:

Starting off quite small with planned cosplay and makeup looks:

1) Blackbeard

Everything for Blackbeard is completed now, i finished the tattoo sleeve last week so now its just a case of picking a day and getting it done!

2) Cerberus

This project started in January LAST YEAR. This is not good. It started as a stand alone makeup look, a little ambitious but noting too extreme; full body paint, three looks in one day and some experimental photo edits. Eventually it became a two part project, the first part being the muzzled dog look i did that august, the rest then got put on the back burner and has remained there ever since.

3) basic cosplays

Nothing too crazy here but i do have an extensive list of my more basic character cosplays to actually get into, these i already have all the parts, i just haven’t got around to actually putting them on my body. I also need to make a post uploading the most recent ones I’ve actually completed.

4) six: Howard

I started this Kathrine Howard cosplay quite a while ago too. This project is definitely one of my more ambitious cosplays and i have without a doubt been procrastinating… the base is complete, but all the rhinestoning i have to do is well and truly putting me off, alas, Francine is really up in my business about it.

Next up: abandoned art projects

1) the long forgotten Ash doll

I began this project august last year, it was to be an experiment with how i created my dolls, to try new techniques. After several hours of work i came to the conclusion that the proportions looked slightly off and left him, cold and alone in the corner of my room for the better part of a year. That wasn’t very nice of me, i must remedy that.

2) The poetry painting

Not only did i abandon my mediocre poetry adventure, i also abandoned my plans of a self portrait based on said poetry, so much for the therapy of creating. I’ve had some more ideas for this recently so I WILL get this done.

3) the Sanrio nightmare

I decided to Frankenstein two of my sanrio build-a-bears a while ago, unfortunately, i didn’t make any attempts for quite some time but last week i did indeed cut them up and stitch them together (not to toot my own horn but it looks rather good) now i need to sculpt their faces and accessorise them, so honestly not too overwhelming of a plan.

4) continuing my collage and junk journals

This has always calmed me down, i genuinely love this kind of journaling but always forget about it and push them to one side (i don’t really know why, but i think i need to really get back on it.). Francine thinks a few pages once every two weeks would be a good goal to start for this, along with:

5) SKETCHBOOK WORK

“Crikey Katie your supposed to be passionate about illustration, what happened to your calling in life? This is getting ridiculous, pick up your sodding pen and do something”

Well that’s me told.

In all seriousness i understand that setting the definitive goal of getting all of this done before the end of the year is a little ambitious and will likely have adverse effects, so i wont be so very strict with myself.

I genuinely want to get back into a regular creative routine, i have 9 projects listed here, with various levels of progress and i think if i focus on those i have almost completed first i should be able to get over half of them done. Of course the sketchbook and scrapbook work is a continual project with no endings but id still like to get it started. I want to make an effort again, I’m in a rut and i need to get over it.
